How will you celebrate Earth Day? Many people remember Earth Day by planting a tree, boning up on useless earth factoids, or pledging to become a better recycler. I would like to suggest something a lot more proactive: stop feeding hungry children! You may be asking “But, how does this help the planet?” Well, that is precisely why I am here—to help everyone understand how feeding the hungry is actually destroying the planet, not helping it.

Most of us have seen the TV commercials featuring dirty, scrawny, doe-eyed little urchins silently pleading for your help  “For just 80 cents a day, less than the price of a cup of coffee, you can provide food, clean water, education and health care to a child in need.” Sure, those puppy dog eyes might tug at the heartstrings, but let us look at this logically, shall we? Many children in third world countries are born to parents that can not provide for them. They live in regions that are not able to support large populations due to poor soil quality, climate, drought, and widespread disease. The environment will not magically change into a temperate climate that will suddenly support large amounts of agriculture and livestock needed to feed the human population. By providing what is, and never will be available to people in these regions the underlying problems will never be solved.

When infants that, under the laws of nature, should not have survived are given artificial advantages the problems are compounded exponentially. These infants that are given advantages that allowed them to survive will continue to need assistance throughout their entire lives. They will then most likely reproduce and be unable to care for their infants, just as their parents before them. When does the cycle end? It ends when we say “when!”

STOP feeding hungry children.
